INFO

Designed by prominent architect Roy Grounds and completed in 1959, Canberra's iconic Shine Dome was built to reflect the innovative spirit of Australian science. Often referred to as the “Martian Embassy” due to its UFO-like appearance, it was the first building added to the National Heritage List in September 2005.

The dome's 710-tonne concrete shell is supported by 16 arches sitting in a circular moat that surrounds the building. Inside, the Ian Wark Theatre a circular auditorium (pictured left) easily seats 150 people which is surrounded by a full circle curved corridor which house offices, meeting rooms and a small library. Nestled between the city centre and the Australian National University (ANU), the Shine Dome stands out as a premier Canberra landmark. At night, its custom exterior lighting often changes color to match local events, much like another local icon, Telstra Tower.

The Shine Dome is a favorite spot for architectural photographers, and I’ve visited countless times to capture its exterior and unique indoor spaces. I shot this image shortly after sunrise, as the early morning light filtered through the arches to cast long shadows and highlight the dome's geometric form.
