This is the Speaker’s Suite, tucked at the end of the House of Representatives wing inside Old Parliament House, Canberra. John Smith Murdoch, the Commonwealth’s first in-house architect, designed the building in the Inter War stripped classical style intended to look dignified without looking permanent. The building was opened by the Duke of York, King George VI in 1927 on May 9. It housed the Federal Parliament until 1988 when it moved up the hill to the current Parliament House.
The Speaker Suite was fitted out for the Speaker of the House, and its last occupant, Joan Child, left much of the room as it was in the mid 1980’s. The building is now the Museum of Australian Democracy open to the general public and sits on the National Heritage List.
MOAD #2 and MOAD #1 were both captured on a visit to the Museum of Australian Democracy. Definitely the most photogenic room in the building this landscape slice highlights the great attention to detail in the Museum, little snippets of history, the way people used to work, a true blast from the past.
