INFO

Rainbow Bridge, officially named Tokyo Port Bridge is a suspension bridge across the north side of Tokyo Bay that connects Shibaura Pier to the Odaiba waterfront in Minato. Running 798 metres long, with a main span of 570 metres and tops out at 126 metres tall. The bridge has two decks with the upper containing four lanes of the Shuto expressway whilst the lower carries a local road, Yurikamome train line and a pedestrian walkway.

The name, voted on by the public comes from the lighting which appears at night. Coming from the main cables which light up red, white and green, powered by solar energy during the day. This makes Rainbow Bridge a common feature in postcard shots of Japan giving a great view of Tokyo Tower, Tokyo skyline and on a clear day Mount Fuji.

The main view of Rainbow Bridge comes from the nearby Daiba Park in Odaiba. Just a short walk from the Odaiba bay the park offers a fantastic view of the bridge that frames Tokyo Tower in the distance. This image was a brief pit stop after my image Coconut Mall, taken from the same park I figured that, seeing I was already there, I may as well photograph this iconic scene as I may not be back for a few years.

This was a reshoot from my last trip, breaking my rule of avoiding the same images I captured previously. But, given the circumstances I thought I may as well try to improve on my previous work. Captured with a 45mm shift lens, shifting up, I snapped up this shot just as the lights came on. A clear sky, vibrant colours and the Tokyo Tower in the distance, a wonderful snapshot of the city.
