THE STORY
This footbridge sits right where Ballarat’s rail network used to fork in two.
In September of 1889 a branch line opened at this location curving away from the main Ballarat to Melbourne line just before Stawell Street, running 11 kilometres south to Buninyong, calling at Eureka, Canadian, Mount Clear and Mount Helen along the way.
Passenger trains continued on this line until November 1930 when they stopped. Freight held on longer, with the section south of Eureka closing in 1947, and the last of the track lifted through the 1980s. The junction itself is still active today, part of the line running out through Ballarat East towards Ararat.
This image was captured the morning after a wedding in the city of Ballarat. Very tired and needing a good reset to my social battery I ventured out in the dark with my Fujifilm X-Pro 1, a camera which despite having owned for some time, I hadn’t actually used all that much.
After much strolling I stumbled across the footbridge overlaying train tracks, the composition was lovely, simple, a classic leading line. This image whilst not being the most flashy, stylish or recognisable location wise ended up being the catalyst for restarting a lot of my personal projects. Using the X-Pro 1 for a few years as my for fun camera and, most notably, my print store project.
