Designed by AXS Satow and opened in April 1996, the building's whole personality comes from the Conference Tower, four inverted titanium and glass pyramids, eight storeys up, balanced on giant supports. The 6,500 tonne upper structure was built on the ground first, then jacked into place over three days in 1994, a slower, stranger version of how most buildings get made.
Captured on the afternoon of my day trip to Odaiba in Tokyo Bay and following my visit to Fuji Television Headquarters, Tokyo Big Sight was the second on my list of buildings to capture. It’s certainly a very unusual building visually, because of its upside down pyramid appearance but nevertheless its very impressive to see in person.
Unfortunately when I arrived the weather took a turn for the worse with overcast skies coming through Tokyo. Because of this there was a long period of experimentation for me. During this I captured Tokyo Big Sight from a variety of distances, focal lengths, trying to use the surrounding context to create scale for visual contast as the light in the scene was very diffused.
That changed when I noticed a long spell of clear sunshine about to peek through, rushing to get ready I setup for the hero shot of the building. A simple straight on composition, centered with my wide angle lens on the trip, the Laowa 20mm I got ready just in time for the sun to shine through creating long shadows and some much needed contrast in the scene.
Sticking around for a little bit longer I managed to capture some pedestrians walking through the scene just before the sunshine disapeared giving me the scale I was looking for.
